OPERA IN FOUR ACTS

With his early work, Nabucco, Verdi took his first step in his great career as a composer. Nabucco is a monumental, romantic and dramatic show with arias of extraordinary beauty and the most recognizable Va pensiero, an impressive cantabile aria for choir sung unison.

The opera is set in Jerusalem and Babylon around 587 BC. It is based on a biblical story about the hardships of Jewish nation in Babylonian captivity. The message conveyed by the libretto is, however, just a starting point to bring up for discussion the topic of freedom. For this reason, there were examples of introducing bans on productions of Nabucco, for example, in Italy or in Poland (Wrocław, 1968). Lodz production of the play focuses on the complexity of human relations in a world full of brutality, greed and intrigues, where people search for love and divine presence. Critics described the production as a powerful metaphor of conscience in a nation engaged in policy of intolerance, and an homage to its victims. It is Babylon 2.500 years ago, the 20th century Europe frantic with wars, and the 3000 years old Jerusalem. Still relevant, universal content, rousing music and grand scale are the undeniable qualities of the production.
